HISTORY • Good Vibrations (1977-1978)

"Good Vibrations was formed by Josh Weaver and Candy Anderson in the early 70’s.  This was the first highly professional band I had worked with both musically and vocally.  Josh Weaver had been musical director for Ike and Tina Turner in Las Vegas before moving to St Paul, Minnesota to form the band Good Vibrations.  The band packed the Chain Link and other venues five nights a week and hired only the best players in town.

Auditioning for the band was a strange experience.   I was contacted by
Josh to show up at a bar named Pudges on Ford Parkway in St Paul.  When I arrived with my equipment no one was there, no musicians, nobody.  I waited for a while and decided to get warmed up for when the band arrived.  No one showed and I practiced for about forty-five minutes or so, then Josh appeared from the dark recesses of the club.  He said do you want the job?  I said I hadn’t auditioned yet.  He said that he was impressed and had heard enough.  I had wanted to work with the band for quite some time.  The songs were everything from Stevie Wonder, Herbie Handcock, DJ Rodgers and many more of the era.

Dale Mendenhall was the sax player in the band, along with Chuck Smith on keyboards, Terry Ferguson and Ricky Washington on drums, Rocky Robinson on vocals along with Candy Anderson.  Dale and I soon became friends and later we would write the songs, Bullet Trane and The London Spy together.

Working in
Good Vibes was a wonderful experience, as I really had to get my shit together.  Josh would always challenge his band by having us learn complex songs and being a total pro all the time. Thank You Josh."
