HISTORY • Gypsy (1979-1980)

"I wanted to tell this story from my point of view because the truth is so hard to find regarding this band.  I was asked to join Gypsy just after the band was signed to RCA records for a five-record deal.  Gypsy was a hard working band organized by James Walsh and the horn section, Deone Johnson, Dick Jorgensen and Todd Hansen who had worked with Maynard Ferguson’s Band and were very dedicated and talented players.  David Rodriguez on vocals/guitar and Junior Trejo on drums and Scott Franso, bass were the rhythm section.  It was a great band, the loudest in town.

The original Gypsy was popular when I was about sixteen years old and had a few hits on the radio. The version I played with was nothing like the original.  This one had a killer horn section and sounded like Chicago, Santana and Blood Sweat & Tears all rolled up in one.  I was soloing all the time.  We had played many concert venues and opened for The Commodores, Rick Derringer and many others

By the time Gypsy recorded their second LP at Muscle Shoals.  I was the only remaining band member left on the album.  The album also included, the Tower of Power horn section, the Muscle Shoals horn section and the Bee Gees string section.  I had received a compliment from Donald Fagen for my arrangement of the song, Caves Of Altamira.  After completion of the album, I left the band in 1980 to form the Behringer Band.."
